What do our experts examine?

Components inspected at our MOT centre Stockport include:

  • Registration: We cross-check the vehicle's VIN number and number plates to ensure they match the documentation.
  • Brake system: Brakes play a significant part in safety while driving. Our experts check whether they are working properly.
  • Steering and Suspension: Our technicians check for any wear, corrosion, and damage to the steering and suspension.
  • Lights: Functioning of headlights, indicators, fog lights, brake lights, and hazard lights are checked.
  • Tyres and wheels: They are inspected for bulges, tread depth (the legal minimum is 1.6 mm), other wear and tear, and damage, along with the overall condition of the wheels.
  • Seat belts: We check whether the seat belts are working properly.
  • Horn: To ensure the sound is audible and does not violate any set noise pollution rules.
  • Exhaust and emissions: The exhaust system is checked thoroughly, and an emission test is carried out to ensure the vehicle meets the legal environmental standards.
  • Windscreen and mirrors: We check for scratches, stone chips, and all-over visibility.
  • Overall body condition: We look for corrosion and significant body damage.

You can find the complete list of parts tested at our workshop or the government website.

Certificates we issue

We issue two types of certificates based on the test results.

  • VT20: We issue this certificate when all the vehicle components are working properly as per the legal guidelines. In cases of minor faults, you will receive this certificate with an advisory note. You should get these faults sorted as soon as possible.
  • VT30: We issue a VT30 certificate when a vehicle fails to pass the test due to major- or dangerous issues. Our experts mention the reason for the failure and advise the best possible repair option to rectify the defects. Repairs and a partial re-test must be carried out before a VT20 can be issued. Only with this certificate can you drive and park legally on public roads, and only then will your vehicle insurance cover it.
